As per a GMA story, the reinforcements from the 7th Philippine Marine Battalion left Villamor Air Base in Pasay City, Metro Manila around 3 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, onboard a Philippine Air Force C-130 cargo plane bound for Cagayan de Oro City where they will be given assignments by the Armed Forced of the Philippines’ Western Mindanao Command.
Philippine Marine Corps deputy commandant Brig. Gen. Alvin Parreno led the send off ceremony at the air base.
The additional forces will augment the two battalions of Marines from Tawi-Tawi and Central Mindanao earlier sent to assist the Army in fighting Maute and Abu Sayyaf militants in Marawi City.
Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said only 10% of Marawi City is still under the terrorists’ control. The focus of the military operations, he said, is to clear the city of terrorists, to rescue trapped civilians, to recover civilian casualties and to help in the relief operations being conducted by local government units and non-governmental organizations.
