According to Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, the gunman took his own life through self-immolation inside one of the rooms of the hotel.
“The lone gunman is already neutralized. Patay na siya, nagsunog siya ng sarili sa loob ng hotel room 510. Patay na siya, sinunog niya sarili niya,” GMA News quoted him as saying.
[He’s now dead, he burned himself inside hotel room 510. He’s dead, he set himself on fire.]
Dela Rosa said the man—while lying in bed—wrapped himself with a gasoline-soaked blanket which he then set on fire.
The PNP chief added the extent of the fire burned the gunman’s remains beyond recognition.
“Sunog talaga beyond recognition, hindi na makilala,” he said.
[He’s burned beyond recognition, he can’t be identified.]
Aside from the gunman’s remains, Dela Rosa said they have also recovered the two firearms the former used to storm the casino early Friday morning.
“Na-recover ‘yung kanyang baril na isang submachine gun na maliit at isang short firearm na apparently caliber 38. Nasunog kasama niya sa bed na hinigaan niya,” he said.
[We’ve recovered his guns, one small submachine gun and one short firearm which is apparently a caliber 38. They were burned along with him on the bed he laid on.]
With the situation contained, Dela Rosa said authorities are now working to identify the gunman and figure out his motive. He stressed though, that the assailant had worked alone as per their initial findings.
“So far wala siyang kasabwat. Lone gunman. Hindi pa ma-identify sa ngayon. English-speaking siya. Nagsasalita siya ng ‘Get out, get out’ sa lahat ng na-encounter niya,” he said.
[So far he didn’t have cohorts. Lone gunman. We can’t identify him for now. He was English-speaking. He was saying, ‘Get out, get out’ to everyone he encountered.]
Earlier, Dela Rosa said police were viewing the incident as a case of robbery, not a terror attack.
